This striking desk is made from two book matched planks of Claro Walnut. These are woods cut from black Walnut trees on the west coast of the US. Many are from walnut orchards where the trunk is black Walnut and the English walnut fruit bearing branches are grafted onto the trunk. The live edge of the tree is left exposed on the outside edges of the top of the desk and has many interesting live edge features. These two planks were cut from the center of the tree where there is a lot of pith (cracks in the heart of the tree). These cracks are all filled with dark epoxy. The figure in the top of the desk is mottled curly figure spread throughout the top and there are several almost black color figures running up the edges of the desk. The two halves of the desk are joined by a series of 7 aluminum butterflies and some structure under the desk. The contrast of the silvery aluminum against the dark organic Oregon walnut is quite handsome. The sloped in legs challenge the eye visually but the desk is quite sturdy. There is a small pencil drawer with a pencil and pen organizer in the drawer.
