This desk is made primarily of wenge and spalted maple. The border inlays and handles are ebony. All the drawers are joined with hand-cut dovetails and hung on wood rails. The entire front face of the desk follows a gentle inward curve. The body of the desk is finished with sprayed lacquer; the handles are finished with shellac and wax.
Spalted maple is maple wood with dark veins caused by a pattern of rot or bacteria in the wood. Once stabilized, this wood is very decorative as it often looks like a pen and ink drawing through the wood.
Wenge is an African wood with a regular, closely spaced grain of dark brown to black color. It is both hard and heavy and works well as either an accent wood or a primary material.
Ebony is a heavy wood generally jet black in color with variable gray streaks. It is durable, works nicely and its rich color and it is often used in musical instruments.
