In its natural form, bamboo as a construction material is traditionally associated with the cultures of South Asia, East Asia and the South Pacific. For instance, bamboo is still in continuous use as scaffolding for the construction of skyscrapers in Hong Kong. In recent years, it has become a popular construction material in the U.S. because it can be sustainably harvested. In the context of contemporary American furniture and cabinetry, it is laminated into sheets and cut into panels and shapes. Because the core of the manufactured panels is made of solid strips of bamboo, the edges of each piece are visually interesting.
