Northwest Fine Woodworking
Tom Stangeland

When the Gallery cooperative formed in 1980, I was a young man of 20 working in the lumber yard that all the woodworkers frequented. I looked up to these furniture makers who were expressing themselves through the designs they created and the wood they bought. Five years after that, I participated in my first group show. Four years later, I became a member. This cooperative effort has allowed me the privilege of pursuing my goals and making a career of it. I’ve drawn challenges and inspiration from my colleagues, and I am proud to have them as partners and friends.

The life of a craftsman is not easy, but it’s what I asked for! Blending material and design to form beautiful and functional objects has been my desire since I was a small boy. I have a deep respect for the woods I work with, and I am continually amazed by the beauty that nature provides. The essence of creation is the proper balance between the design, the process and the material. This is what I strive for in the work I do.
