Northwest Fine Woodworking
Hugh Montgomery

I first walked into the NWFW gallery 17 years ago and marveled at all the precision, finesse and skill of the craftsman that had produced such beautiful furniture. At that time, I was working in a custom cabinet shop and with the gallery as inspiration, I set out to pursue fine furniture making. Today, I am the newest member of the NWFW gallery.

During these formative years, I worked with several of the gallery members and benefited from the exchange of ideas and techniques and made lasting friendships. It is this community amongst fellow furniture makers that makes this gallery a unique and special place.

I felt it was appropriate to build a special edition of my Anniversary Bed for the NWFW’s 30th Anniversary show. This is the same design I built for my wife on our 10th wedding anniversary, yet this bed’s wood and veneer patterns are dramatically different.

For this piece, I focused on African Mahogany in its solid and veneer form and delineated the head and foot board elements with Yellowheart wood. Using African Mahogany veneer with a subtle curl to its grain, I veneered a sunburst pattern radiating from a center point below the head and foot boards.

The delicate craftsmanship of veneer work, combined with solid wood construction and a thoughtful
approach to wood and its grain are common themes throughout my work.
