Northwest Fine Woodworking
Hank Holzer

Northwest Fine Woodworking opened its doors in 1980. A year or so later I came across their first storefront and was amazed by the creativity of the founding members. Reflecting some thirty years later on those designs, I imagine that the owners of those early pieces are still elated with their unique purchases. They were timeless creations with a bold, fresh, aspect that does not get old. That early work gave me the strength to follow my passions and choose a career of designing and creating hand built furniture. Five years later, after studying with various master woodworkers, I joined the ever evolving community of members and staff that is the Northwest Gallery of Fine Woodworking, allowed my imagination to take off and commenced to follow a thread of learning and discovery that continues to this day.

Hip Hobbit Table
The table is 48'' in diameter and 29 1/4'' tall made of Madrona, Madrona Burl and Western Walnut top. The chairs (only 2) are 17'' high seats and 36'' at the top of the back, made of Western Walnut.

It is always interesting to look back and consider the influences in a new design. The lines of the legs were inspired by years of pouring through books of Art Deco images. An earlier version of these legs appeared in the dancing Fred Astaire cabinets. In this table, they have been reinterpreted with a squareish upturned angle at the tip. A uniquely burled section of Madrona tree, brought to our shop years ago, has appeared in a number of pieces but I saw a table pedestal in it and saved the straightest section for this use. The legs and the turned area of the central pedestal with their creamy Madrona color share a smooth symmetry and provide contrast to the darkness and irregularity in both the burled bark trunk and the pattern of the walnut top. The chairs are made from the same richly textured Claro Walnut.
